What Is Dark Genesis?

Heroes are the meat and potatoes of the game.

Dark Genesis by Esprit Games is a free to play idle MMORPG that offers party building and battles. In this fantasy world, war has broken out and your duty is to muster a collection of popular heroes inspired but different myths from around the world to fight back. The game requires no download and can be played directly from your web-browser. Dark Genesis offers two distinct modes: battle and base building. In battle mode, your party of heroes fights back against the enemy in a series of levels that gets more challenging the higher you progress. This where you can choose to be "idle" and let your party hack and slash mobs to earn gold and diamonds on their own before manually clicking on the challenge button to fight the boss. This part isn't idle and you need to click your heroes' skills and unleash their powerful attacks in order to win. Success here will take you to the next stage where you can do it all over again. In build mode, players are tasked with rebuilding their mighty citadel on a floating island, and this will offer great benefits in the long run. As players progress further in the game, they earn profile experience points that unlocks new facilities on the island. These include new buildings like the Forge to craft and upgrade equipment, and the Guild War monument that opens access to PvP.

Avengers Assemble!

Where you place your heroes in formation will be key to winning

The main draw of Dark Genesis is most definitely its demigod heroes and party system. Players are given a few basic heroes at the beginning, but over time you'll get the opportunity to unlock better heroes, identified by their Elite symbol and ultra high stats. The more popular they are in their mythology, the more expensive they are to unlock. Once you have a full party of five, the real fun begins. Every hero is ranked by their stats of Attack, Defense, Health and Rarity. They also come in typical MMO class archetypes, so there are ranged and melee DPS, Tanks and Healers. Where you place them in your party's formation will be crucial to determining the outcome of battles. Heroes also have an elemental system, where they represent one of the five elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Lightning. Pitting heroes of Water against Fire will result in higher advantages, while having two heroes of the same element in your party will grant party-wide boosts.

Hero progression is very important in Dark Genesis, so you'll need to grasp the basics of earning currency to level up and upgrade your heroes. Gold and Diamonds are received from battle and are needed to both level up your heroes and fuse them to get stronger. Your party's overall score is determined by the strength of your combined roster, so keep that in mind when you're about to challenge higher battle stages or other players in PvP. Having said that, idle battles can be boring but useful if you're multi-tasking on another screen. Boss challenge battles however are challenging and offers some good fun, especially with party composition and tinkering.

The End Game

Once you have a decently geared party of heroes and have completed the main challenge levels, what's next? The end game in Dark Genesis is the answer, and it can be unforgiving especially to free players. More content will open up at the end-game, like Abyss Dungeons, Lamp World Bosses and the endless Explore mode. All of these are very difficult at the highest levels, requiring hours of work and hundred of thousands of diamonds - both in-game and bought by cash - in order to defeat Elite stages successfully without issues. PvP on the other hand, can be both competitive and exciting especially when paired with opponents of similar ranks. Because it's a human on the other side of the battle, fights and party compositions become interesting and strategic, giving you a different challenge to overcome altogether.

Is It Worth Playing?

As far as idle MMORPGs are concerned, Dark Gensis does offer what it says on the can. Its idle-based party combat consisting of well known heroes from mythology will set you out on a hunt to collect them all, power them up, and take them to battle. The idle battles can be a snooze-fest, but it truly shines in boss stages or against other players in PvP. The downside is that to be truly top of the food chain, you'll definitely need to spend money here. Otherwise, it's a decent free to play MMORPG that's often relaxing to jump into on your web-browser for free.
